When the housing is thinner than the light source, the light has to travel sideways. That single sentence explains why side-emitting LEDs replaced top-emitting ones in car interiors, appliance panels and slim light bars. 1. Automotive interior light guides. Door strips, footwell lines and instrument surrounds are lit from the end of a PMMA guide; a 0.6 mm emitter hides inside the trim and produces a continuous, glare-free line.
2. Appliance control panels and knob halos. Washing machines, ovens and air fryers backlight icons and rings through a thin window, and the white point stays matched across a full front panel.
3. Slim light bars and edge-lit signage. Because the light enters from the side, lettering and decorative bars read as evenly illuminated glass rather than a row of visible dots.
4. Portable devices and status bars. Power banks, e-cigarettes and handheld instruments use the 020 to create a thin illuminated seam without adding thickness to the enclosure.

First, specify a single CCT bin per production batch: a warm 2800K reel mixed with 4000K reels will show as a colour break across one door panel. Second, keep the guide material and the LED lens thermally compatible — at 60 mW the heat load is small, but a tight sealed housing still needs a vent or a metal bracket if the panel runs hot.
